Who or What is Connex?
Connex Social is a 4 year old digital marketing consulting company which Paul Kortman founded and manages. We maintain between 8 and 20 clients, most of our clients are larger and stick with us for 2-3 years. We have a team of specialist contractors, currently we have experts in Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Facebook Ads, Google Adwords, Retargeting, Content Generation, and SEO.
We provide services in digital marketing ranging from pure consulting where we simply advise the client on what to do, to actually implementing the tasks outlined in the strategy.
We specialize in all forms of digital marketing except building websites. The tactics we typically employ look like:
- Search Marketing (SEO, PPC)
- Social Media Marketing (including ads)
- Online advertising (including remarketing)
- Data Analysis and reporting
- Email Marketing
- Conversion Optimization
- Content Generation
One day we’re tweeting for a Fortune 500 company the next we’re training 30 members of a client’s staff on search engine optimization strategies. As an apprentice for Connex you will be able to learn all of these techniques, their strategies and more.
What’s the Apprenticeship Job Like?
It’s hard to tie it down to a specific job description because you’d be doing a lot of unique things. Still, we want to explain some of the tasks and responsibilities you’ll be taking on.
This is a period of growth for Connex. However, in order to do that we need someone to backfill in for the many different tasks that an Internet Marketer like Paul does for clients.
With that being said you may receive tasks like:
- Place this content into a MailChimp campaign with proper CTA formatting and run an A/B test
- Find out why the data is not being recorded correctly here
- Find sites to link back to this site.
Some of the tasks will be repeatable and will have documented processes, others will be one offs that no one on the team has ever done before. You will have support, but you will also be expected to get it done.
What Skills Do You Need?
You need to be a learner. Many times you will be told to research how to do something, how to improve on something or how to solve a specific problem. The answers will not always be provided for you. Don’t get me wrong you’ll have a ton of support, but you will be expected to try to solve it on your own first.
You need to be teachable. We’re looking for someone who doesn’t yet have the experience in digital marking, and we’re willing to train and teach, but a humble spirit and teachable attitude is needed.
You need to hustle, you need to have ambition. If there’s a better way to do something but it’ll take all night of work to get it done in time for the client… or if you see more ways to free me up to focus on growing the business or bringing in new clients yourself. Either way this is a position for an entrepreneur-minded person that doesn’t have the network or the ability to take the risks yet.
You need to have a laptop, and you need to know how to use it. We depend on internet and computers, you will need to provide your own laptop and you should be efficient at using it, from keyboard shortcuts to typing speed, from knowing what applications can improve your workflow to knowing how to remove distractions.
You’ll need to write. There will be a lot of emails from you to the rest of the team, you will need to know how to explain yourself, how to ask for what you need and how to explain problems you are running into. We’re a globally distributed team (Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, United Kingdom, and the US – Michigan, Rhode Island and Texas.)
You need to be creative, but not in a design appearance way, more in a problem solving way. You will assist in improving Connex’s established processes. We’ve got our own processes for accomplishing the work for our clients, but we don’t want you to just follow a Standard Operating Procedure and call it a day. You should be able to creatively come up with new strategies to increase efficiencies or the value we offer to our clients.
You need to be great at verbal communication. You’ll be explaining things to staff and clients alike as well as communicating with me when you don’t know how to do something. You will need to excel at helping our clients feel like they are the only client. We value long term relationships with our clients and do not do quick flips.
Where do I need to be?
You will be living in Chiang Mai, Thailand, one of the hubs of location independent entrepreneurs in Southeast Asia. We will be covering an apartment, utilities and more. We’ll take care of many of the day-to-day chores and tasks you’re familiar with (laundry, cooking, dishes, cleaning, etc.) so that you can maximize your time to work while you’re here.
What makes this better than a normal job?
Mentorship – You’ll be working closely with Paul as we continue to expand our processes and services. You’ll get in-depth look at a profitable, growing business and have direct access to Paul, Paul’s network, our clients, our contractors, and more.

Love It… but it can’t be all easy street, right?
We want to integrate you into our business and allow you to prove your hustle. At the same time, you’ll be getting tons of value from us through training and connections
You will know everything about our business. That’s quite a bit of trust we’re putting in you and we want to be brutally honest about what you’re getting into from the beginning.
You should probably be single. While we won’t go as far as saying you can’t be in a relationship, but this isn’t a package deal for families, couples, etc. We’re looking for someone who will pour their undivided attention into Connex. No side gigs or other client work is allowed.
We do ask you to be here with us in Chiang Mai the first three months. Paul will be traveling around SEA for the remainder of this engagement and you can travel too, however we’re planning on doing a significant amount of in person co-working and training during the first three months.
While this may eventually turn into a more permanent location-independent position, we know that working together in person will help you to learn the ropes and help us find areas of opportunity. We want the type of person who will ask, “What do we need to do to make this relationship continue because I’m digging it and I’m good at the work!”
It’s going to be hard work. Ok, you’re not going to be digging ditches or moving heavy furniture all day, but some of the work will seriously deplete your brain power. Some of it will be boring, and some will be frustrating (sometimes we deal with hard to please people).
We’re going to need your full attention. This won’t be a side-project for you. We’re looking for someone that wants to create a permanent, valuable position on our team. This isn’t an extended vacation, we want someone with a “commitment to the hustle” and savvy enough to realize the opportunity and growth potential you’ll have with us.
What about money?
You’re not going to make a ton of money at the start. The good news is that most of your living expenses here are paid for and it is super cheap to live in SE Asia. You’ll make $1,250 USD per month which is plenty to live a comfortable life here in SE Asia and sock enough away to take a couple of trips while you’re here. Industriousness and initiative are rewarded, so if you improve the quality and timeliness of the service we offer our clients you’ll find your rewards increasing. You will have to pay for some stuff yourself – Nights on the town, cell phone, personal items, etc.
We want people that are open to travel, remote work situations, etc., but we’re not looking for backpacking hippies that just want to goof off for several months. We want hungry, eye-on-the-prize hustlers that are serious about changing their lives and building businesses. You’ll be running projects not tasks, so we need those that can take initiative and get things done!

We will schedule Google Hangout interviews with Paul and one or more members of the Connex team. Typically there will be at least two interviews, maybe a third. The final step of the selection process will be for you to arrange reference calls with former supervisors as well as others we may choose.
We hope to have you selected/hired by April 22 and on the ground by May 1. This is a position for a location independent company. However, the first 3 months you will be working side by side with Paul in Chiang Mai Thailand.
